  1. A cod is any FISH of the family Gadidae,
  2. especially the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua
  3. found in the North Atlantic and Baltic. 
  4. It is brown to grey with spots, white below,
  5. and grows up to about 1½m (5ft). The main 
  6. cod fisheries are in the North Sea, and off
  7. the coasts of Iceland and Newfoundland,
  8. Canada.
